Puppy farming laws to be toughened
The RSPCA says demand from Asia appears to be driving an increasing incidence of puppy farming in regional areas.
A court ordered a Curlwaa couple to pay costs of $80,000 and restrict dog ownership to 20 animals after being found not to be adequately caring for all of the 120 dogs found on the farm late last year.
The RSPCA says it is also expecting another puppy farm operation near Ballarat to be closed down by next week.
RSPCA national president Hugh Wirth says the operations are driven by demand from Asia for white fluffy pups and governments must be vigilant.
"Right at the moment before the Victorian Parliament, there are amendments to those laws which will toughen up the sale of pets from pet shops and also toughen up even more the law related to puppy farming," he said.
