Immune System Disorders

You many have tried to get your head around what an Immune System Disorder is?

Or perhaps you have heard the term Auto Immune Disease and don't know what it is.

The answer is quite simple;

"FAILURE OF SELF TOLERANCE" - Dr. W. Jean Dodds

I was fortunate to be able to attend a seminar by Dr. W. Jean Dodds on the evening of Wednesday 25th June 2008. I would not have missed this seminar for anything in the world not even my latest fetish for gold and diamonds.

This is one passionate lady.

Much of what she talked about I already knew because I have been following her work for many years but there was much new and updated information presented on the night. There was a written hand out of her seminar to take home and refer to.

As someone who has tried many different feeding regimes for my Weimaraners and the rescued felines, I will stick with raw feeding as close as possible to what a carnivorous animal, the dog, would eat in the wild. Feeding as close as possible to the wild feeding boosts the immune system far beyond any other type of feeding.

Dr. W. Jean Dodds' hand out only provided scientifically backed information and the comparisons of the control groups of dogs showed the following:

  • Higher Packed cell volume (hematocrit) in all raw fed groups versus cereal-based kibble.
  • Higher blood urea nitrogen (BUN) in all raw fed groups versus cereal-based kibble.
  • Higher serum creatinine in the Volhard raw diet group only versus cereal-based kibble.
Zeta is my first raw fed Weimaraner since my first involvement with this beautiful breed back in 1983 and certainly I have noticed a few differences though not immune related;

  • Zeta does not have a smelly breath
  • Zeta has the most amazing pearly white teeth which amaze her vet on the few rare visits she has had
  • Zeta does not smell doggy
  • Zeta does not poop like there is no tomorrow
  • Zeta's poop is firm and does not smell that hideous shitty smell commercial feeding produces in poop
  • Zeta has not had any negative health issues from birth to present
Milly is due to whelp 13th September 2008 and this litter will be my first raw fed litter. I will post progressive updates how they get on the raw feeding.

Thanks to my hunter friends Richard Boots and Steve Tilley I have a few exciting bits and pieces in the freezer for this grey bundle of joy.

For me the seminar only further solidified that raw feeding builds a strong immune system. Something every dog owner needs to consider before thinking about the perceived inconvenience of this type of feeding.

  1. WOW! Raw feeding maes absolute sense. Funny how the commercial food companies can "sell" you and convince you otherwise.
