A while back VCA Inc was negotiating with Pets at Home to only have purebred dogs in its pet shops, a small group of folk here in Victoria did all they could to sabotage the best advertising and educational tool the purebred dog has ever had and succeeded, sadly!
While no doubt this small group may have seen what they did as something good for the purebred dog, it was NOT. On the contrary! What this small group failed to see was that dog breeding IS a business. Law allows it to be which in turn people with not so good intentions take advantage of by setting up big breeding farms where dogs suffer, push out mutts left right and center, because the law allows them to provided they meet certain standards as set out in the legislation. The whole time the purebred dog breeder gets pushed further and further out of the market, the purebred dog slowly moves toward extinction, all because a small handful of people try to tackle the subject of Puppy Farmers from the wrong angle.
The purebred dog breeder MUST come to terms with the fact that they are a BUSINESS and must WANT to compete for the market share. Pets at Home was going to be a terrific start for this to begin happening.
Imagine it . . .
Pets at Home only having purebred puppies and dogs available to the public.
There are thousands of people going in and out of Pets at Home, imagine these people only seeing purebred dogs and puppies on the premises.
Imagine what that would mean to the Puppy Farmer, to have one outlet less that would sell their product.
Sure, without doubt, there would have been teething problems but the VCA Inc seemed to have things reasonably well covered in the arrangement between purebred dogs breeders and Pets at Home.
I visited Pets at Home shortly after it opened to see for myself what all the fuss was about which was created by this small group of people with tunnel vision only to be pleasantly surprised.
This was not your ordinary pet shop.
This was classy and up market.
There were two large pens which were then used by breeders to promote their breed. You could bring your dogs into the pens, you were right there with them, while the public would walk around and look at your breed of dog. You could talk to the public about your breed, offer the much needed and talked about 'education' on the virtues of the purebred dog, hand out information and so much more.
That golden opportunity is now lost forever for the purebred dog. Pets at Home are not interested in unprofessional conduct, child like tantrums from stuck up do gooders. Pets at Home only have mutts in their shops now.
Another win for the mutt breeder and Puppy Farmer.
On the other hand Dogs NSW is leading the purebred dog world once again by looking at ways and taking opportunities where ever they come from and present themselves, to get the purebred dog and puppy closer to Mr. and Mrs. Public.
Kudos to Mr. Keith Irwin and his team of dedicated people in NSW for all the work you do for the purebred dog and Kudos to Dogs NSW members for seeing the benefits of this rather then having tunnel vision like some VCA Inc members did with Pets at Home.
