Acceptable Surgical Procedures - American Kennel Club
How can some of this be right?
The American Kennel Club published a list of acceptable surgical procedures and while some are obviously accpetable some simply are not and go to further demonstrate that as a purebred community, no matter what country, we are unable to see the difference between right and wrong, acceptable and unacceptable.
Surgical Procedures (October 1993 Board meeting)
The Board approved the publication of a list of procedures that, undertaken to restore the health of a dog, would not in and of themselves affect a dog's show eligibility. Such procedures would include but not be limited to:
- The repair of broken legs, even if such procedures involve the insertion of pins, plates or wires. Obviously ACCEPTABLE.
- The removal of damaged cartilage. Obviously ACCEPTABLE.
- The repair of ligaments that have ruptured or been torn. Obviously ACCEPTABLE.
- Cesarean sections. Obviously ACCEPTABLE.
- The repair of umbilical hernias. Is this ACCEPTABLE ?
- The removal of tumors or cysts. Obviously ACCEPTABLE.
- Gastric torsion/bloat surgery. Obviously ACCEPTABLE.
- Splenic torsion surgery. Obviously ACCEPTABLE.
- Tonsillectomy. Obviously ACCEPTABLE.
- Correction of "Cherry Eye" (which involves the gland of the nictitating membrane). Is this ACCEPTABLE ?
- Debarking. Is this ACCEPTABLE ?
- The removal of dewclaws if a regular practice in the breed. Obviously ACCEPTABLE.
Each and every one of us holds the destiny of the purebred dog in our hands.
